Slinkerwink in Daily Kos presented an excellent diary on why a robust public option is a non-negotiable component in any healthcare reform legislation that passes Congress.
May I add a few other things.
For those spreading the myth that a public option would lead to a government takeover of the health industry, the argument fails to take into account the fact that the government is already involved in the healthcare industry (namely the Veterans Administration, which provides care to our veterans, and Medicare, which provides care for seniors).
Lawrence O'Donnell confronted a GOP congressman on the above fact last Friday on Hardball, and the congressman couldn't give a straight answer about why he's not against the VA or Medicare given his opposition to any public option.
If that didn't shatter the outright myth of government takeovers enough, do those who are propagating the garbage of government takeover know about FedEx and UPS?
Yes, those two private companies still get large chunks of the package delivery market even with a public entity-- the U.S. Postal Service-- competing against it.
So if these private insurance companies who are fighting the public option are so secure about their product, why do they feel they can't compete against a public entity?
FedEx and UPS have succeeded even against the USPS, why can't these insurance companies do the same?
